In your opinion, what is the most haunting image from either of these poems, “To Helen” or “The Raven”?  Describe the haunting image you see in your mind.  How does Poe use words and mood to build this image?  Give specific evidence from the poem to support your ideas.

Respond in a paragraph of 8-10 complete sentences.

He talks about the raven, and how it is at first there to comfort him, and then he finds out that it is there to make him doubt himself, and feel hopelessly depressed. I think this is one of the most frightful images because the raven enters his room not really expected or wanted, and Poe enters the fact that the bird could be the devil. The fact that the raven says nothing but “qouth the raven nevermore” is kind of scary because who wants something that only fills you with doubt and sadness?

  2. Faith Says:

The raven is the most haunting to me. The speaker was a little paranoid about Lenore. It was haunting to me because I know how he feels when it comes to being paranoid about a death of a loved one. Not only that but when the raven came in, every question that the speaker asked the raven would respond. I think that it was haunting because it was so ironic that the speaker would ask a question that would go with the response nevermore.

  3. Seth Says:

To me it’s in the raven whenever the man opens the door and there is nothing there. It was just nothing but blackness that he could stare into. It was like he was staring in to his own soul of nothingness because of is lose of his loved one. Because he lost her he was turned into just a shell of what he use to be with nothing left inside but blackness.

The raven uses the most imagery to me. The speaker very intereted about Lenore. It was haunting to me because I know how he feels when it comes to being scared about a death of a loved one. Not only that but when the raven came in, every question that the speaker asked the raven would respond that would be very weird to me. I think that it was haunting because it was so ironic that the speaker would ask a question that would go with the response nevermore.

  5. Randy Says:

The most haunting image to me is the loss of someone dear to the reader. If anything I can see that the reader is supposed to be able to feel the depression of the loss. Poe is really good at using words to give a great image of what he wants us to see or begin to understand. In “The Raven” the man gets so upset that he begins to question the raven about a long lost Lenore. He then becomes infuriated and begins to yell at the raven. All the raven would say to him was, “nevermore.”

  6. Amanda Says:

In my opinion, I think that one of the most haunting images is hearing someone knock on the door and then have a bird fly into your window. It’s not everyday that someone knocks on your door, you get up to see who it is, and there’s no one there. Then, after having that happen, hear something at your window, open it, and have a bird fly in out of no where. If that would have been me, I would have flipped. One image I think of is someone trying to attack me when I think about all of that happening. The way he uses his words to build up the suspense and create feeling is what I thought was cool; it made the poem seem freaky.

The Raven was the most haunting from both of the peoms. In the story the raven is haunting because of its solid black figure. He describes the way it acts, and reacts and also describes the way it moves, and everything about the raven. He described that he asked the raven several questions and it never responded at all and he said it was a thing of evil such as the devil.

The most haunting image I see from the stories is having a raven tap on my window and when I open it and it comes flying in and sits over my door. That would just give me such a quivering feeling. Having it just sit there and watch u. And just have it like the mood of the story already at night, quiet and just all suddenly some they happen like that would just be creepy.

  9. Ryan Says:

To me the most haunting image in poe’s poems was the raven sitting on the statue. The raven is a haunting sight because it never moved. The fact that it always answered with “nevermore” was also creepy. Poe used words such as dark, gloomy, dreary, and bleak to describe the look and mood of the room as the raven sat on the statue.
